Bill Hanauer,
Ossining Village Mayor
Mayor Bill Hanauer has been a resident of Ossining since 1996 when he moved here with his long time partner Alan Stahl. Only five months after his arrival in Ossining, Bill became active in the community when he was elected Vice President of the Sparta Association. As President of the association from 1999 to 2004 Bill lobbied on issues affecting the Village, such as Sparta Park, traffic, redevelopment of the Arcadian Shopping Center, and historic preservation. Bill is also on the Steering Committee of ‘Ossining Communities That Care’, chair of the Program Committee of the Rotary Club of Ossining, a member of the Ossining Athletic Booster Club, Associate Member of Independent Hose Firehouse #6, and Board Director of ‘Prison Communities Inc.: Rehabilitation Through the Arts’, a program that offers incarcerated prisoners the opportunity to build the necessary skills to transition themselves to back to society and become positive members of their communities.
Bill has been Mayor since 2007, and before that was a member of the Village Board since 2005. As Mayor, Bill spearheaded the formulation of the first comprehensive plan for the Village of Ossining since 1959, the first wide-ranging zoning amendments since 1992, and a model Affordable Housing Law. The three were then implemented in collaboration with Westchester County and developers to bring new units of housing for employees, firefighters, beginning police officer, and others in the restored 1878 Ossining Trust Building.
Looking ahead, Bill is committed to move forward with smart consolidation, particularly the future consolidation of the Village and Town DPW and Town Highway Departments, the Parks Departments, and the Town and Village Courts. Bill supports the Study to determine if creating a co-terminus Village/Town will result in significant tax savings and improvement delivery of services. Bill is also actively working on developing our Downtown Historic District, commercial areas, and the Hudson Riverfront; Continuing investment in our roads, and other infrastructure; Promoting construction of new "green" housing and encouraging "sustainable energy" restoration of existing homes; Strengthening enforcement of Village building codes; and renovating aging firehouses; building new ones where most needed; and replacing aging apparatus.
